In Denmark we don´t celebrate Thanksgiving. Instead, we take the time to celebrate the four Advent Sundays as a family, and the first weekend is special because we also celebrate our son´s birthday. No grandparents this year because of the snow, but we will go to church together, sing some of our beloved Advent hymns - and have a nice (fat) lunch.

Dorte - It sounds like a wonderful celebration, and I hope you all have a very happy time. Your 'photo is lovely!
Sounds like a great holiday. Getting to celebrate over four Sundays instead of one day. Hope you and your family have a wonderful time and your son has a very Happy Birthday. Love the photos.

Thoughts in Progress
Thank you, Margot.
We have finished the service and the lunch so two fresh photos for you.
Happy birthday Dorte's son.
Advent is celebrated in churches here in England but tends not to be a big event in the home. Because of our love of Germany where Advent is a huge celebration, we tend to do the whole advent thing, lighting special candles etc. A very happy advent to you and yours Dorte, I wish you all well.
Mason: thank you. We love singing and lighting lots of candles in the dark December weeks.
Tracy: thank you. I don´t think that many Danish families celebrate Advent the way we do, but we all love to sing the old hymns.
How beautiful ... quite a few in the U.S. also celebrate the four Sundays of Advent.
I hope you had a wonderful time, good food and happy birthday to your son.
Cathryn: I am glad we are not the only ones. These Sundays mean a lot to us. I just sent my son off by train, and he says he has had a good day.
I'm glad your son had a good birthday celebration on this first Sunday in Advent! I've heard you speak of your daughters, but didn't know you had a son, too.
We celebrate Advent in our church and when our kids were growing up we always had a wreath at home.
Thanks for sharing this with us!
Kelly: our son is 29 so we don´t see him as much as the girls :D
We also have a beautiful wreath much like the one in the photo at home.
Lovely tradition. I think having so much opportunity to be with family and to have some peaceful time to sing and be with the community are all great.
I love the wreath and the way it is hung. Not a sight you see often in the USA.
Beth: yes, it is beautiful, but it does offer an occupational hazard for my husband, the vicar. If he stands right beneath it, he may be hit by hot candle wax.
