Save the Words

Scatterbrained as I am today I keep telling myself that now I´ll begin that blog round, but I run into one distraction after the other (such as five-star reviews on Amazon).

I just visited Rob Kitchin´s blog and was reminded of "Save The Words". Of course I ran off immediately to salvage some word of my own, and I just had to adopt ´magistricide´  ;)

NB: for danske læsere - jeg har lige opdaget, at min lille Thy-historie, Entreprenøren, er blevet udgivet på Skrive-Bloggen mens jeg har været væk.

Look what I got

I won a beautiful pair of mittens some time ago so I though I knew what was in the parcel the other day. But no, Heather of Books and Quilts had included a few wonderful surprises for me.

Thank you, Heather. You are a great ambassador for your country. What I don´t get is how you knew I had lost my copy of "The Call of the Wild."

Remember, if you click on the photo, you can enlarge it.

Six Word Sunday

I am sure you have come across six-word stories or memoirs before, e.g. the famous Hemingway story: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” I think Shakespeare could have written some terrific ones: “Is that a dagger I s...?”

When my friend Margot, Confessions of a Mystery Novelist, called for dribbles the other day (fifty-word stories), my mind switched to Hemingway mode and began spitting out six-word stories.

Here is my new variation of the concept: stories inspired by book titles:

Golden Age Mysteries:

1. “Gaudy Night.” “Unnatural Death.” “Whose Body?”

2. Having: “Busman´s Honeymoon.” Wanting: “Strong Poison.”

And now a threat: don´t you dare copying my idea – unless you come back here with a link so we can share the fun!

Trick or Treat?

”You daren´t …” Their voices taunted me all the way up the drive.

I knocked on the heavy oak door, and an ancient butler opened the creaking door. ”Whom may I announce?” he whispered, trying to focus his watery eyes on me.

This story is now for sale in DJ´s Daim Stories: Candied Crime.

What´s Your Pick?

This pretty mushroom is one my husband ´shot´ Saturday when the whole family took a nice walk in the wood near our cottage. Don´t worry, it wasn´t one of my family members that snatched a bite.

What is your favourite murder weapon?
What is your best example of a story where it is used?

While the dust settles

There were quite a lot of things I had planned to do today, but for some reason we (my family and I) decided it was time to attack the dust and dirt in our living-room and dining-room.

We did, and now priority two (which I thought would have been priority one) is editing The Cosy Knave. Twenty-five pages or so to go. I will probably feel I have to go through it at least once more before it is good enough to send off to an agent or publisher, but still that day is getting nearer.

And while you are waiting for a proper (criminal) blog post from me, you might enjoy a few of my blue bottles, now reasonably dust-free.

11:15 - second version finished.

8 Questions

Photo of Lodbjerg Fyr for Patti and other lighthouse lovers - can´t you just turn your screen?

I’ve been tagged in a game that goes like this, I answer a series of questions with entertaining comments (Cathryn, I don´t mind being tagged, but entertaining comments about MY life?)

1. If you could have any superpower, what would you have? Why?
The photo goes to prove that I am amazingly strong - unfortunately I don´t know how to undo my disasters.
So what I really want is the ability to make time run faster when I correct essays – much faster!
Why? - anyone who has tried it will know what I am talking about!!!

2. Who is your style icon?
Rhapsody Gershwin – my new protagonist (a librarian in the countryside – I am sure that says it all).

3. What is your favorite quote?
Hamlet: ”Words, words, words”
- for two reasons: 1) even I can remember it 2) when I write fiction, it is my guiding principle

4. What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?
I´ll keep the more private ones to myself, but this one always makes me happy: ”You are the best mother in the world.”

5. What playlist/cd is in your CD player right now?
Haydn something in the car (this one is my daughters, but it would be something classical)

6. Are you a night owl or a morning person?
Nightier than thou!

7. Do you prefer dogs or cats?
Dogs (of the kind that won´t bite me). Cats can be almost as catty as your female fiends.

8. What is the meaning behind your blog name
Well, DJ is for my name, of course, and krimiblog goes back to my very early blog days when I thought I was going to blog in Danish and translate some of the posts into English!
But surely all my intelligent readers can guess it means crime fiction blog.

I´m tagging Margot of Confessions of a Mystery Novelist
Jose Ignacio of The Game´s Afoot
Kelly of Kelly´s Thoughts and Ramblings

Have fun! (And if you come around and feel like being tagged, just tell me and I´ll run after you before you can say Jack Robinson)

My Life According to Crime Fiction 2010

Do you remember this funny meme from last year?

I saw the 2010 version of this game on Bernadette´s blog the other day – and of course I couldn´t resist. I have cheated just a tiny bit as I have not finished reading Red Leaves yet.

In high school I was: Found Wanting (Robert Goddard)

People might be surprised I’m: Sworn to Silence (Linda Castillo)

I will never be: Nearly Dead Man (Åke Edwardson, my translation)

My fantasy job is: Faceless Killers (Henning Mankell)

At the end of a long day I need: The Reunion (Simone van der Vlugt)

I hate it when: Red Leaves (Thomas H. Cook)

Wish I had: Resolution (Denise Mina)

My family reunions are: A Darker Domain (Val McDermid)

At a party you’d find me with: The Suitcase Boy (Kaaberbøl & Friis)

I’ve never been to: The Orchestra Pit (Unni Lindell; my translation)

A happy day includes: One Good Turn (Kate Atkinson)

Motto I live by: Never Go Back (Robert Goddard)

On my bucket list: Awakening (S.J. Bolton)

In my next life, I want to be: Misterioso (Arne Dahl)

-------------------------------------------------

Want to play? – of course you do.
And remember to come back with a link to your funny, tragic, terrible answers.

See Kelly´s hilarious post.

Headshots

Don´t worry, I haven´t had any serious head injuries recently!

One of the great things of rubbing your shoulders with creme de la crime is that you learn so many useful tricks of the trade. From my friend Elizabeth Spann Craig I have learned that a real, professional author has to have new headshots taken once a year.

Dear me, mine are with my old glasses so yesterday I asked my children to help me a bit. They did their very best, I can assure you, and now I want you to vote for the best shot. Which one should I use in my brilliant crime series?

Under Cover 1

THE SOLUTION: ANN CLEEVES´ RED BONES

Anyone who wants to play? I just received a huge parcel - my May and June books. (I know I am behind real time, but don´t worry - I never forget to spend my book budget, I just want time to enjoy the process of selecting my gems).

Here are some pictures of the first cover - sorry I was too busy to take some proper photos, but I am sure some of you smart people can guess which book this is.

If you know, just leave a hint in your comment.

Warning: if you are good at this, I most certainly will see it as encouragement to bring more of these posts!

Blogger gone AWOL

A Danish blogger who is usually quite reliable (when it comes to blogging, that is), has gone missing. She was last seen right here Saturday afternoon. Her family and friends have not been unduly worried so far as she is known to neglect them shamelessly when on her precious blogging rounds all over the world, but late this afternoon they discovered that she had not touched her laptop for several hours!

Here is the evidence (click on photos to enlarge), and please leave any theories as to her whereabouts in the form of a comment. Her kind and forgiving family seem to want her back no matter how distracted she is. (They seem to fear she may have concocted several serious crimes while away so they feel relatively safer when they can keep an eye on her).

Sudoku Weekend

This weekend did not go quite as planned, but perhaps Sudoku was just what my scatterbrain needed.

Tomorrow: great guest post about Academic Crime - just for you!

Tuesday + Wednesday: exams - don´t expect to see me much.

Thy´s Day # 16

This beautiful christening dress was sewn by my great-grandmother in 1922. She lived in Thy all her life, most of the time in the parish next to ours. Before she married, she trained as a dressmaker. My mother and her siblings were baptized in the dress which is still in fairly good condition.

The Red Sofa

[Thank you to Ann Cleeves who threw out a red sofa – and inspired me to write the story]

Someone has left a red sofa in our drive. In medias res, so to speak. Is this installation art, or some kind of hoax? With my bag flung over my shoulder, I bend down to scrutinize it.

“What´s that dirty, old thing doing in our drive?” My husband has left his desk to join me, throwing suspicious glances at it over his reading glasses.

“How should I know? It is probably a joke.” While I refuse to take responsibility for the ancient piece of furniture, my memory begins to rummage for something. No, that is just not possible.

Two days later a sprinkle of autumn leaves cover it. The result is beautiful but desolate. Our neighbours have started a whispering campaign, and soon they will unite in rebellion as if I had left a corpse to rot in their well-regulated suburb.

“What are you going to do about that ... that thing? Can´t you call someone to remove it?”

I married an academic, not a handyman, so I suppose it is fair enough practical problems belong to my sphere. I know I should call the council and arrange for them to collect it, but I am growing more and more certain I recognize the monster. Impossible to explain this to my well-regulated spouse, but some superstitious fear prevents me from taking action. I am waiting for his next move.

---------------------------------------------------

Ralph sat down next to me on the red sofa and put a large hand on my thigh. “Come on now. It is you and me, and you know that.”

I tried to move away, but the hand tightened its grip on me. “Gimme a kiss, and we´ll forget all that rubbish.”

“Why won´t you understand that it is over? Over! I am sick and tired of arguing with you. And all those friends you hang out with.”

He inched closer, mouth open. All I could think of was that he reeked of beer and stale smoke. I knew that if he kissed me, I would retch.

“Is there someone else? Is it Mick?” He put up a hurt face but a huge belch destroyed the effect somewhat.

“Don´t you get it? I don´t want to have anything to do with you or any of your mates! My dad will be here in ten minutes.”

“So I am not good enough for the little teacher´s daughter any more? Is that it?” He performed his favourite trick, cleaning his dirty nails with his flick knife, but I had seen it too often to care.

“Mind you, you´ll regret it. I won´t do anything now. But some day, I´ll kill someone you care about. And to remind you who I am and why I did it, I will send you the red sofa.”

-----------------------------------------------

I am sitting on the weather-beaten sofa, wrapping my coat around me. I can feel all the watchful eyes on me behind starched curtains. I have just called the hospital. Again. No news. He is still unconscious and they can´t say which way it will go.

I look at the stained fabric, mapping my six months with Ralph. But surely no one bears a grudge for twenty years. My father is in his late seventies, and we all know his heart is frail. I don´t believe in this voodoo stunt. Still, I cannot pull myself together to do anything. I have begun to punch the number to the council more than once, but my fingers will not obey. His words ring in my ears and the woolly contraption has me in its clutches.

Blog-Out

I am afraid it will not be possible for me to blog very much next week.

At work, I am participating in a project called Bodies of Evidence in one of my classes. In groups, the students will have to try to solve criminal cases on their own, and it is my job to keep them preoccupied with a steady flow of clues, reports etc every day. My two colleagues and I tried it two years ago. All in all it was a great success – but it certainly kept me busy!

So don´t expect regular posts from me – unless some of you want to play along?

Any wanna-be detectives out there?
