London Research

As I have realized how useful a blog is, I may as well try to consult my readers. I need research help from people who know much more about London than I do.

I want to install a couple (two doctors) in a good London flat (not too expensive). They are both around forty and have one small child. He is probably a bit yuppieish, she is an idealist but enjoys good quality. Besides, they chose London because they want anonymity. I imagine they work at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Where would a couple like this settle down in 2009?

I would imagine they would live in Highgate Village, Hampstead or Finchley.

Norman, thanks a lot.

Hampstead or Islington, but they'd need money.
These are the two trendiest places for the liberal intelligensia in London, and both convenient for Great Ormond St. Stoke Newington for those who can't quite afford Hampstead or Islington. Camden is also possible - very varied from extremely wealthy (Regent's park) to deprived (round Pentonville or Holloway prion) . If they aren't so well off they could live in Muswell Hill - very many professionals (consultants, etc) live there but it is a tad further out. If they are a bit edgy and want to invest in an up and coming area that is still deprived and crime-ridden, social workers heaven, Hackney.

Maxine, thank you very much!

Or South of the river in Battersea? I thing Islington and Finchley are both too expensive. Two doctors could probably afford it, but if they're idealists perhaps they spent some time working in the third world, and don't have much in savings.

Maxine is more up to date as I haven't lived in London for 22 years.

Norman, anyone could fool me ;)
I have lived in Reading, but to me London is just St Paul´s Cathetral, Big Ben etc.

Tim, thank you - and enjoy your holidays!

South of the river there are Dulwich village or Greenwich. Both very popular with the professional upwardly mobile and the Dulwich school, as Norman will attest, is a big plus for those whose liberal/socialist instincts do not extend as far as the education system!
The "south of river" equivalent to Hackney is probably Camberwell Grove, where Ken Branagh and Emma Thompson lived while together. Close to Denmark Hill hospital as well, if Great Ormond St does not work out!

Who knows! I love Greenwich and South Kensington, but I haven't lived in London since the 1980s!
