DJ´s Bait in the Box # 61

This novel is the second in a series.

“Waiting at the foot of the gangplank was a performer. A moving piece of art or street theatre. A slender man, dressed like a Pierrot. A clown mask on his face. He didn´t speak, but he acted out a pantomime for the visiting travelers. He made a lavish bow, one hand held across his stomach, the other sweeping towards the floor. The tourists smiled. They were willing to be entertained. To be accosted in a city was one thing – a city housed beggars and disturbed people and it was safest to turn away, not to catch the eye – but this was ....... There could be nowhere more safe.”

The rules
If you recognize the quotation, or if you think you are able to guess who wrote it, please post a comment. Just leave a hint, do not spoil the fun by giving too much away. The book will probably be reviewed on Friday.

Well, it think it safe to say and a VERY well-established point on FF that the author of the novel in question does not rank among my own most esteemed. :-)

Well that's all very well Phillip but I'm not sure that narrows the field much for those of us with no clue ;)

No clue either.

I think I know this one. If I suggest it is 2/4, rather than half, does that work (without giving a spoiler)?

Philip: well, at least I know who she is now ;D

Maxine: I hope it will help my poor overseas readers.

That is true, Bernadette. Sorry about that, but it was actually intended as a tip within an in-joke for the four or five bloggers who followed a recent very long exchange on FF that centred on this author. Naughty of me. I'LL try to give a clue that is FAIR to all within this very sentence I'm writing now, though geographers and knitters will have an edge.
