DJ´s Bait in the Box # 40

You have not forgotten this one, have you?

“We´ve got a body. On the wasteland – a clunch field – a mile north-east of Muddington. A girl. Strangulation by the look of it. It´s probably pretty straightforward but as it´s close …”

Shutting the window with careful hands, he tugged trousers over his pyjamas and pulled a polo-necked sweater over his head. Then he picked up his torch, switched off the bedside light and made his way downstairs, treading warily and keeping close to the wall to avoid the creaking treads. But there was no sound from Eleanor´s room.

The Rules:
If you recognize the quotation, or if you think you are able to guess who wrote it, please post a comment. Just leave a hint, do not spoil the fun by giving too much away. The book will be reviewed on Friday.

WANTED: tins with British and American flavour.

Thank you, Kerrie, Margot and Tim, for your contributions. But I still have plenty of space on my ´shelf´.

Thirty-two years is a long time, but, no, I haven't forgotten it. I might just add on a general note that I do not approach this author with the reverence many people seem to think appropriate, and quite a few of her works since this one I have allowed to go past without spine-cracking genuflection on my part, if I may be allowed a wee pun.

Oh, this is a good one, Dorte! Part of that title is actually a part of my blog layout...

Muddington, 32 years, she, reverence wee pun ........got it! Pity I wanted to be the first man to get this one.

I'm wretched at this game! I barely even figured out my own book. :) I think I may know who the author is, though.

I'll look and see if I have any tins in my cabinets, though...

If I were an expert at this sort of game, I would be tempted to go back to the beginning (perhaps even to the first man, Adam), and then perhaps, if I look around a bit, I might witness what is really at stake. But, alas, I am not an expert.

Philip: I am not 100 % certain I get the point, the whole point and nothing but the point, but as Norman does, I won´t worry about that :D

Margot: fine clue.

Norman: well, at least you got Philip´s clue. I am not sure I would have guessed the book based on that one. But it is just fine that different readers add different kinds of clues.

R.T.: hehehe! I liked that.

Elizabeth: you probably know her - if not, you must come back for my recommendation on Friday :D

Thank you for your gorgeous tin!

My apologies, Dorte, for I was perhaps too indirect in writing, "I might just add on a general note...". Those last words were meant to indicate that, though what followed might contain some hint, it was a comment upon author and output generally, not the book in hand. Given this, Norman's comment surprised me, I have to say, but then I realized that he had made connections I didn't have in mind but are actually there. Clever Norman indeed!!

Dorte H sagde ...

Philip: no need to apologize! I did realize you commented on the writer, but did not know if there were clues for the actual book. But if there is anything to find, trust Norman to work it out :D

No idea who it is although torch certainly is not American, but I do love those tins.

Although I´m not an expert on these games, I think I got this one. Being one of my favourities writers.

Bernadette sagde ...

Ah yes ... I kind of recognised it but the hints have helped me work out which one of the lady's tomes it is - she shares initials with a young Aussie crime writer now.

And I'm with Philip on the whole reverence issue - I suspect if she started writing today she'd not get a look in.

Dorte H sagde ...

Patti: thank you! And you are quite right, she is not American.

Jose: I do realize that they are nearly impossible for someone who has not read the book so I am glad you got this one.

Bernadette: Well, I like her. No further comments on the author right now as I won´t spoil my own game.

Uriah Robinson sagde ...

Did you get my first man clue? ;o)

Dorte H sagde ...

Norman: *embarrassed* No, I did not. I am too busy right now, but two weeks more and my writing course is over...
