Stieg Larsson Day

American covers 1 + 2, and the first French cover (weird, isn´t it?)

Three Danish covers - conspiracy & playing hide-and-seek, perhaps.

Three Swedish covers. Focus on Lisbeth Salander, rather sinister colours.

And finally, the British ones which imitate the Swedish style to some extent.

For the very interesting Spanish covers, visit Jose´s blog - thank you, Jose, for taking part in the fun!

Dorte - These are really compelling covers! Thanks for sharing : ).

I am impressed that you managed to line them up so well in that pattern, and I like the Danish covers.

Margot: when I had seen Petty Witter´s comment from yesterday, I knew this was the obvious post for today.

Norman: the easiest way is to load the last pictures first, three in a row, and then squeeze them a bit around afterwards (and I know what you mean, placing photos is not exactly Blogger´s strong point).

Dorte: You can find the Spanish covers in my blog. Hope you like them.

Jose: I like them very much and I have added a link to my post. Thank you!

Dorte, Blogger has a new version making it easier to squeeze images around. Perhaps you haven't switched to that one yet?

Anyway, I have been down and out with either the flu or a very nasty cold (don't know which, but have been very much under the weather for almost a week, and am still feeling kinda ill), and yesterday was spent watching the Girl With a Dragon Tattoo movie, which I think was adapted kinda well to the big screen. Of course the book has more, but I liked the movie. Have you seen it? Now I am ready to see the next one :-)

Dorte H sagde ...

Louise: poor you! I hope you´ll feel better soon.

I have watched "The Girl.." My husband bought the dvd recently, and we both enjoyed the film. We didn´t think the film Salander came across as an Asperger, though.

Thanks for that Dorte, very interesting. Strange to note that for some reason I have seen just as many copies of the American version here in the UK as I have of the English version.

The French cover is definitely odd -- reminds me of the Addams Family.

I think I like the American covers the best, but it's probably because those are the covers I'm used to. Then I like the Danish covers next, and the Swedish covers third. The other covers don't appeal to me at all.

Dorte H sagde ...

Petty: yes, that is odd as the British ones come out first.

Beth: I agree; the French cover gives you a completely wrong impression of the character Lisbeth. I also think the Danish covers are rather tasteful. What is also interesting is that some countries focus on Lisbeth Salander exclusively.

I'd noticed the odd look of the French cover to the first book. It make the book seem like the hearwarming story of a young girl's triumphs and struggles as her hearty Swedish-American family builds a life for itself amid the harsh climate of the American Upper Midwest.

The first Danish cover looks like a new edition of an old American crime story set at a newspaper. So many of the other covers took their inspiration from Salander. It was interesting that this one picked up an another side of the story, a side that I enjoyed.

Peter: have you tried to enlarge the French cover to see what the girl has around her neck?

I also think the Danish covers are rather suitable for a conspiracy and all these old secrets. And for the second and third the publishers have probably realized how important Salander is - and added her tattoo.

Peter Rozovsky sagde ...

I could see that she wore heads around her neck, which seems more appropriate to a gothic horror story.

Peter: or for Jo Nesbø´s stand-alone, The Head-hunters :D

The Swedish and the British covers definitely are creepier feeling than the American covers. I agree with Beth Fish Reads - that French cover reminds me of The Addams Family!

Dorte---So funny about the French cover...it looks JUST like the old US show "The Addams Family." I just saw that Beth thought the same thing. How odd.

I like the UK covers best. Ours aren't nearly as good....

Belle and Elizabeth: I think that is because she really looks like a pale little vampire :D

And I don´t quite get the idea behind the American covers either - if there is any. It will be interesting to see what they come up with for no three.

I saw this entry on Petty Witter's blog and decided to come look. I've read the first and have the second sitting on my shelf.

I really enjoyed seeing all the various covers! Interesting!

Dorte H sagde ...

Hi Kelly.

Good to meet you, and thank you. I think covers are fascinating, and some really make you want to buy the book, others are boring or off-putting. On the other hand I buy most of my books second-hand via the internet, and usually I don´t know what I get until I open the jiffy bag :D

I just read the first two books and enjoyed seeing your post with the different covers. I like the British ones as it gives a noir type feel to the books. The Danish covers are classy and are probably more appropriate to the Millenium focus of the novels. I look forward to seeing the movie when it's released in the US.

Dorte H sagde ...

Bonnie; I am so glad that people love this post which was really a spur-of-the-moment thing. But then I also tend to enjoy posts with pictures which appeal to my imagination.

Have you read any of American mystery author Chelsea Cain's series, Heartsick, Sweetheart, Evil at Heart? She's a friend of a friend and came to our book group when we read her books - she brought some of her overseas editions. It's so interesting what different countries have on their covers for the same books. I would have expected just the words to be changed, but the publishing world is certainly its own little microcosm. I think you'd enjoy her books very much if you haven't read them. Cheers! ~Erin

Hi Erin.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will put her on my list of authors to check out :)
