DJ´s Bait in the Box # 54

[This week´s wonderful box belongs to Margot, Confessions of a Mystery Novelist. A clue, but perhaps also a teaser]

This stand-alone crime novel is not a debut.

The dark spot on his brain. That was how he explained it to her long ago. It was like a dark spot, pulsing. He said were it not for the dark spot the size of a thumbprint, a baby plum, he would be living the life of the man he so clearly was. Intelligent, stalwart, respectable. The town doctor, the trusted citizen. The doting husband, the kindly father.

The dark spot, shaped, perhaps, like a crooked star, a pinwheel, a circle fan.

The Rules:
If you recognize the quotation, or if you think you are able to guess who wrote it, please post a comment. Just leave a hint, do not spoil the fun by giving too much away. The book will be reviewed on Friday as usual.

These are getting more difficult, but the sentence 'The town doctor, the trusted citizen' has produced a mental block. I can only think of only one fictional doctor, and the very real Harold Shipman.

Norman, I know that you know the author - though you may not have read this one. I am afraid the good doctor and the ruddy Quaker have confused you ;D

Anonym sagde ...

Dorte - Thanks for using my contribution : ). If I'm right about this, then the author has quite a religious sounding surname. But I'm buried deep in work right now, so maybe I'm wrong...

Dorte H sagde ...

Margot: oh, you are a scream! Two excellent clues - and thank you for sending me the wonderful tin.

Anonym sagde ...

Oh, my pleasure. This is a fun, fun game, and I'm honored to be a part of it.

I just have to wait and see what others guess!

Jose Ignacio Escribano sagde ...

I have no idea again this week, more likely I have not read it, but it sure sounds like an interesting reading Dorte, thanks for the game.

Donna sagde ...

Ah, a positively regal noir afficionado, methinks. And \ do believe the tin is more of a trunk.

Uriah Robinson sagde ...

Ah got it!

Dorte H sagde ...

Beth: fair enough, though you should have a better chance than Jose from Spain ;D

Jose: I think you will probably like it.

Donna: hehe. Goes well with our discussion this week, doesn´t it?

Norman: Margot and Donna have been very helpful, haven´t they?

Maxine Clarke sagde ...

Well, I am totally stumped (appropriate for a trunk? though maybe Donna does not mean of the tree variety but the suitcase. See how clueless I am?)

Looking forward to the answer, and to kicking myself if I have read this.....;-)

Dorte H sagde ...

Maxine: or perhaps some body has been truncated!
- if you don´t get it after Margot and Donna´s clues, I doubt that you have read it.

Margot has the best clues!

Dorte, I had to dig deeply into my memory for the buried answer to this one, and I was stumped until I thought of someone in Detroit, Michigan, USA. She--with her mother's instinct--pointed me in the right direction.

Dorte H sagde ...

Elizabeth: she certainly makes me laugh :D

R.T.: a lot of digging is going on this week; I am glad you struck lucky.

Mack sagde ...

I like the text you selected for your clue. It captures the author's style nicely.

Dorte H sagde ...

Mack: thank you! As the deaths happen quite late in this one, I had to try to find something else that accentuated her style.
