Very nice idea, Dorte. I wonder if there is any merit, just for the sake of a sort of completion, in adding two crime novels set in Antarctica. Dame Karen did a post on crime fiction and that continent some time back, I recall, and someone in a comment came up with a list of about thirty crime novels set thereon -- or putative crime novels, at any rate. He got them from Hubin -- not always the best source -- and the list included the likes of W.E.Johns (Biggles), Dennis Wheatley, and much that was plainly adventure. But there were enough of the true sort to make this viable. I just share this thought with you.
Oh, this one will be easy for me. I'd love to play, so yes, count me in! I'll get started on 1st Jan 2010!
I'd love to participate in this challenge Dorte. It fits in with my usual reading pretty well any way. I'll put a post up near the beginning of the year and watch for more details.
Philip: as I stated, this is a draft (because the challenge is a spur-of-the-moment thing) so I have adjusted the rules a bit, thank you.
Maxine and Sandra: wonderful!
When I have had time to think about the rules and listen to my readers´ suggestions, I will write a proper post.
My TBR stack includes 4 of the 6 continents so I would be a participant. I have had my eye on several Asian books already. South America is the big unknown for me.
Mack: that is great! With a handful of participants in an hour, it should be possible to have some fun with this. (Bernadette is in, and I am sure Craig is also).
Count me in! Does Cuba count as North or South America? Also should it be Australasia in order to include NZ writers.
I shall delay my reading of Dying Gasp a Mario Silva investigation set in Brazil, till January 2010 for this challenge.
Norman, you are in (If you will stop asking me geography questions!)
I have made it Australasia (Bernadette reminded me in Friendfeed), and you can read your Brazil novel whenever you like, as long as you don´t post the review until January).
Looks good Dorte. What about Central America though (e.g. I understand there's some decent Cuban crime that has been translated into English) - group with Nth America (if go the FIFA groupings), or could have a "Latin America" category (Central and South together, since they're mainly all translated from Spanish).
I think it's a good overall format there. Perhaps you could have a link thing like Kerrie does with the crime fiction alphabet - set up separate linking posts for each continent and throughout the year as people read and blog about books from each place, they can link their blog posts all together on your site etc?
It will be interesting to see what 'personal challenges' people set in amongst the overall challenge too (e.g I'd try and pick 12 different countries, so for North America it would be one US book, one Canadian, and for Australasia, on Australian, one Kiwi etc).
You've got me thinking about which countries I've already covered this year. Currently reading an African one (A DEADLY TRADE by Michael Stanley), and have some Asian ones in the TBR pile - e.g. INSPECTOR SINGH INVESTIGATES by Shamini Flint. Need to get my hands on some Camilleri, and some South American stuff though
I'll join in! I made a concerted effort through a challenge a few years back to read more books in translation, and happily that has stuck with me and enriched my reading a great deal. But despite this newfound diversity in originating languages, most of the books that I read are still either North American or European. Your challenge would be an excellent prod for me to expand my reading horizons beyond those continents!
Nice proposal Dorte. Count with me.
Sounds a ggod one Dorte - I think I'll have a head start - I won't be finished THE DEVIL'S PEAK by Deon Meyer this year :-(
Craig: I have included Central America in North America (according to Wikipedia). I don´t know how many gadgets & gizmos I will be able to add (and administrate), but I can always add some extra administrators to the blog and ask for help :D
Kate, Jose, Kerrie: great that you are in!
Great Dorte, all I Have to look is for another Spanish speaking writer in Central America.
Jose: you are far ahead of me. I think I may have a handful of them ready on my shelf, however.
I'll put my hand up for having a go at the easy challenge -its always good to broaden the reading horizons.
Vanda: ah, that is fine! We will be a nicely international bunch :D
