DJ´s Bait in the Box # 45

[The very appropriate box belongs to Tim Duncan]

This is the first in a series of approximately a handful of novels.

“My little girl has not come home … have looked everywhere… everywhere …”

He calmed her down, and methodically he got the basic details from her. “Are you saying since half past five? Then you should have called earlier, ma´am. But just a second…”

“I have a Mrs Uphill on the phone … Her eight-year-old daughter left Sct Basil Sunday school at half past five and has not come home. The mother is very worried.”

The Rules.
If you recognize the quotation, or if you think you are able to guess who wrote it, please post a comment. Just leave a hint, do not spoil the fun by giving too much away. The book will be reviewed on Friday as usual.

”Siger De siden 16.30?

Dorte - If I'm right about this one, then the name of the sleuth is extremely appropriate for this time of year (and it's mentioned in the title).

Dorte, I love this idea of "...approximately a handful...". I shall just say that this series 'inspired' a television series which I alone seem to think unutterably appalling, and there's not much I can't utter if I apply the old noggin. And the name of the detective in question is titularly ubiquitous.

Margot: fine clue.

Philip: I wouldn´t go as far as ´unutterably appalling´, but I might call it utterly uninteresting.

Margot always knows! :)

Ummmm....sounds familiar....

Elizabeth: I know that it is hard to compete with Margot and Philip so I feel much more comfortable running the game than participating in it :D

Completely stumped. Those clues from Margot and Philip made me think of a titled detective, but the appalling TV series has me beaten.

Norman: not at all titled, but oddly enough awarded.

This time it does not ring a bell.

Hmmm. I was going to guess that the author is also someone who writes another genre, and whose name is a geographical feature. (This extract reminds me of her second novel in a series.) But I am not aware of any TV series made of the character, or the name being appropriate for this time of year, so it can't be her.

Based on Margot's clue, I can guess the author - goes by two initials rather than a first name? And I sort of agree with Philip if this is the right person - I did not see many of the TV series but to me they seemed like an average typical formulaic cop tv series - mindless but passing the time pleasantly enough, and well-acted by the main character- but not a patch or even a microdot on the novels (which are very politically incorrect.)

(apols if a re-post - blogger apparently ate my comment before so this is a copy.)

Jose: not even jingle bells? ;)

Maxine: your second choice of writer is quite correct, and I like your precise analysis of the TV series :D (though I like many of the British series for the atmosphere, I have never been able to concentrate on this one - the episodes strike me as very samey)

Bernadette sagde ...

I am, as usual, completely clueless.

Bernadette: I don´t really know how famous the books are, but most of them have been translated into Danish. Perhaps they are just too old for you to have noticed them.

I'm totally confused. I thought I knew and then I read the comments - and I'm obviously wrong

Kerrie: I am struggling to finish the final chapter so I can finish my review for tomorrow - and then we´ll see if you know it :D
