What I Am Reading

I have just begun reading Alexander McCall Smith, The No. 1 Ladies´ Detective Agency. Meet the detective, Mma Ramotswe:

“Mma Ramotswe had a detective agency in Africa, at the foot of Kgale Hill. These were its assets: a tiny white van, two desks, two chairs, a telephone, and an old typewriter. Then there was a teapot, in which Mma Ramotswe – the only lady private detective in Botswana – brewed redbush tea. And three mugs – one for herself, one for her secretary, and one for the client. What else does a detective agency really need? Detective agencies rely on human intuition and intelligence, both of which Mma Ramotswe had in abundance. No inventory would ever include those, of course.”

To be reviewed. When? As soon as I have had time to finish the charming cozy mystery.

I have this book sitting near the top of my 'To Be Read' stack. Can't wait.

Heather, it does seem promising indeed!

This is the second mention of this book I've seen today - and I've been wondering why I haven't read it yet, since it's been in my TBR pile for a while and I enjoy McCall Smith's Isabel Dalhousie and Scotland Street novels so much. I think I might take it with me on holidays. Will be looking forward to reading your review.

I only read this last year Dorte and only after being nagged by a friend forever. I did enjoy the change of pace from my usual fare and have since been mooching the rest of the series to read when I need something light. Hope you enjoy it.

I don't know about this one. Everybody I talked to loved it but when I started it , it turned out boring. So much so that I never finished it.

I really enjoyed it when I read it, and luckily still enjoy the series 9 or 10 books later!

My husband's been watching this adaptation series on HBO and really loves it. I've watched it out of the corner of my eye while I'm at the computer, and it does look charming.

I loooooooooove these books. The tone is so happy and positive (but bad stuff in Africa does get a mention later on). The first books are certainly the best. You are in for a treat, getting to know Mma Ramotswe. I think of her as a personal friend, wise and funny and sweet. She did not teach me to drink rooiboss, but made me enjoy the experience even more :-)

I actually never finished this. I really didn't like it at all. I'll look for your review.

It is so interesting to see all your different opinions on this series.
I can see that it is very different from other crime stories, but so far I like the rather quiet style and the information about Botswana. I feel I know the country a bit because we considered moving there many years ago, and read a lot about the history & culture so that is also part of the pleasure for me.

I think they are a gentle read. Something to pick up when you just need something that you know is not going to be grisly and noir.

Kerrie, "a gentle read" seems to be a good way of putting it.
