E-Books & Edits

Yesterday I did it. I spent $ 1.49 on an e-book. It took a minute or two to select the book, pay for it via Pay-Pal and download the pdf file. Alarmingly simple it was. So now I´d better try if I can put up with reading a story on my computer screen. (I know pdf + computer is not the same as Kindle + real e-book but I am not quite there yet.)

The book was “Witches Witch” by Wade J. McMahan, an American writer I have never heard about before, but for $ 1.49 I am prepared to take a chance. I´ll tell you about my reading experience later.

Editing
For unpublished writers, beta-readers and other sources of critique are invaluable! We do what we can to catch those grammar errors, typos and other mistakes before the editor sees them, but even though you go through your text several times, it is so difficult to see what you wrote and not what you think you wrote.

So when Clarissa Draper offered to review the first chapter of “The Cosy Knave”, I leapt at this chance (I really did, Clarissa, it wasn´t my fault that my first three e-mails were eaten by your spam folder!)

If you are curious, visit Clarissa´s interesting blog to see my chapter and her comments. And if you are even more curious, I can tell you that I am busy checking point-of-view in the manuscript these days.

NB: I had no idea Clarissa was blogging about Kindle today.

For Word Lovers

No, not the computer programme Word (which I have to use but often loathe). For lovers of a large, nuanced vocabulary.

Recently, I sent the Literacy Builder Award on to Cathy, Kittling Books knowing that she is a blogger of many words! Please visit Cathy and enjoy a few of her gems ´around the huckleberry bush´.

You're so sweet! I really did love your cosy! I can't wait to see what the finished product turns out to be and when it's ready for download, you can be sure I'll buy it.

Have a great week, Dorte.

As one blogger put it about the buying of e-books, you are away over to the dark side. Seriously, do keep us informed as to the next step. I know we all wish you well.

Dorte - Thanks for this post about E-books. You give me a lot to think about, both as a reader and as a writer. And I can completely endorse what you said about Clarissa's wonderful blog. Folks, do please visit!!!

Good luck with reading on-screen. I haven't been able to pull it off myself. I've tried with three different novels and I hated them and found them boring and impossible and never got past a few chapters.

Then, later (twice without quite realizing it), I read them in print form and loved them.

I want to try the Kindle experience some time to see if it's better. I'm assured it is.

I read manuscript on screen all day for work, but I don't think I'd enjoy reading a PDF on the computer for fun.

But I have a Sony eReader and a Nook and I do like my experience with them.

I'll be waiting to see what you think.

It only takes one small step, Dorte, when it comes to ebooks ... :) Seriously, though, I fell for ebooks when I decided to download the two sample chapters for THE PASSAGE onto my phone. I was totally hooked, had to buy the book itself, and it wasn't until I finished reading the entire thing on my iPhone that I realized it was 784 pages!

Clarissa's wonderful! I'm off to read the critique now.

Everyone I know who has a Kindle loves it, so I feel the "pull" getting stronger. Not so sure I would enjoy reading a book on my laptop, though.

I was amazed in one of the recent books I read how many errors slipped past the editor. I'm thinking I counted at least 6 errors! One error added an extra letter to name of one of the central characters! This was from a fairly well known publishing house, too.

Clarissa: but your blog and your chapter reviews *are* very useful!

Tracy: help! The dark side! Well, I haven´t bought a Kindle yet.

Margot: thank you! (A bit like your blog, then :D)

Patti: I hoped so but I just saw they had changed the date; now it says the 22nd :(

Nevets: I know that if I want to read proper books on the screen, I´ll have to buy a real e-reader. One of my reasons for wanting it is that one of my stories will be published in an e-book very soon. The second reason is that I hope to spend less on shipping. I buy most of my books from abroad.

Beth: I agree that reading for work and reading crime fiction in my spare time is not at all the same.

Belle: I know that most people who venture into this new world are won over - which is why I hesitate because I love real books so much - if that makes sense.

Kelly: this one was just a short test. I´d never *buy* a gadget of any kind if I wasn´t fairly certain I´d also use it so I just try to gather as much information as possible first.

I read my first e-books on my phone this summer. Despite the small screen, it's surprisingly pleasant and allows me to read while standing in line.

Are you planning to try the Kindle for the PC? It's free.

I forgot to say, I had hoped DISCOUNT NOIR would be out tomorrow as well, but I know you'll let us know when the official day arrives!

Cathryn: if you had seen *my* phone ... :D

And I can assure you, I´m checking the homepage of Untreed Reads every day, waiting impatiently. It is so horribly inconsiderate of them to keep me waiting for three extra days!
