My Challenges - progress in January and February

In a bout of optimism, I joined no less than five challenges for this year, and so far I have done fairly well. If you want to read a review, please select the relevant author among my tags.

The Global Reading Challenge (medium level, 14 books):
Australasia: Vanda Symon, Overkill
Europe: Esther Verhoef, Close-Up
North America: Alan Bradley, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
Cathryn Grant, The Demise of the Soccer Moms
The Seventh Continent: Kate Summerscale, The Suspicion of Mr Whicher (history)

2011 Vintage Mystery Reading Challenge (4-6 novels)

Margery Allingham, Hide Your Eyes (1958)
John Buchan, The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915)

What´s in a Name (6 novels)
A number: C.J. Box, Three Weeks to Say Goodbye
A gem: Peter Lovesey, Diamond Dust
A size: Declan Burke, The Big O

Ireland Reading Challenge (6 novels)
Declan Burke, The Big O
Tana French, The Likeness
Brian McGilloway, Gallows Lane
Colin Bateman, Mystery Man (not reviewed yet)

Bogudfordringen 2011 (Danish)

January: crime before 2000:
Margery Allingham, En morder lukkes ind (1958/1971)
John Buchan, Thirty-Nine Steps (1915)
February: short story collections
Roald Dahl, Kiss, Kiss
Cathryn Grant, Flash Fiction for the Cocktail Hour
Laura Lippman, Hardly Knew Her

And another kind of progress: in January I had so many books in my TBR that I couldn´t squeeze any more in. Since then I have read at least six of those without buying new ones (but don´t ask me how many e-books I have acquired in the meantime - they don´t take up space so they don´t count at all).

What about you; did you join any challenges?
Have you made some progress?

I have made some progress but not as much as I'd like. It looks as though you're doing well.

I like your approach to e-books - they don't count when they don't take up space - ha! ha!

Dorte - I love that 'photo! It looks like my TBR list..

You've done quite well on those challenges - I'm very impressed!

Margaret: yes, I think I did extremely well in January and February has also been okay. I planned a bit ahead so fortunately I have several of the books I need in that bulging TBR.

Margot: the photo cheats a bit. It is from last year when they painted our living-room. But at some mental level it is true ;D

Your challenges are going well. Looks like some very interesting books you've read so far. My TBR pile continues to grow and I feel I will never see the bottom of it. But wait, where would the fun be if there were no more books to read? LOL Continued happy reading with your challenges.

Well done on the challenges. I love the logic of e-books not counting as your having bought a book.

Dorte H sagde ...

Mason: I am quite satisfied with my progress, and I agree that a person needs SOME books on the shelves ;)

Tracy: well, I HAVE bought them (though the latest ones have been very cheap), but my Kindle doesn´t take up more space than when they shipped it to me - and that is one of the brilliant sides to owning an e-reader :D

You're doing quite well on your challenges!! You've signed up for more than I have, but I do plan to join two others before the year is out.

I've read 5/6 on What's in a Name and 8/14 for the Global Challenge. Did you see my review for my first Asia book? It's one I think you would enjoy if you haven't already picked out the ones you're going to read. Jade Lady Burning.

Ellen sagde ...

My, my... very ambitious. How many books do you read in a week?

Dorte H sagde ...

Kelly: I have only found one Asian book so I´ll check it out.

Ellen: one book in a busy week, four when I have the flu :(

Joanne Ganley sagde ...

Impressive! You've inspired me to get on with my own challenges. I've only read one book! :( Ah, well, I'll catch up sooner or later. :)

Dorte H sagde ...

Joanne: you know why I am so ambitious? I am such a bad loser :D

Karen Russell sagde ...

I'm doing pretty well so far, too. But I signed up for 11 challenges. (Goes into the "what I was I thinking?" file.)

Dorte H sagde ...

Karen: 11? Yes, indeed, what were you thinking? ;)

Well, there are people who can finish 15 challenges, so what do I know? :D

Bibliophile sagde ...

I'm doing the What's in a Name challenge, the Gothic Reading challenge and the read-a-Myth challenge, plus two private challenges of my own (Top Mysteries and TBR). All are going well. It looks like I will be done with the first by the end of this month, and then I might join another one. I have also considered joining a TBR challenge, but the thought of reviewing all the TBR books I read is a bit daunting.

Dorte H sagde ...

Bibliophile: I also like the idea of finishing a few challenges early so I have room for a new one or two if I feel tempted.

Bogstavsamleren.dk sagde ...

None. I would love to, but since I never succeeded in finishing any yet, I will stay out of it :-0

Dorte H sagde ...

Linse: well, but you can´t make any progress either then ;)

Beth F sagde ...

I am failing horribly so far -- but I work all the time until the end of April. After that I have time to read blogs and books ... so I'm still hopeful.

Dorte H sagde ...

Beth: I am sure I take them far too seriously (I am a horrible loser ;D)
