V for van der Vlugt
This week´s letter for Kerrie´s alphabet meme is V.
“The girl gets back on her bike and rides on. The van overtakes her and envelops her in a thick cloud of diesel smoke. She coughs, flaps her hand at the smoke and stops pedaling.
The van tears away, in the direction of the Dark Dunes. The girl thinks about her meeting. She´s having second thoughts now – perhaps she should have chosen a less isolated place.”
In January I read and reviewed Simone van der Vlugt´s first crime novel, or psychological thriller. Van der Vlugt has written children´s books before this excellent crime debut, The Reunion, which was published in 2009. See my review.
I could have tried to read it in Dutch, but I am not sure I am capable of reading a full novel in my fourth language any more so I chose to buy it in English.
If you are in for a fast-paced thriller about bullying and loss, this is a good choice. And if you participate in the Global Reading Challenge and want to try something from the Netherlands, this book may also be the solution.

Dorte - Oh, *excellent* choice for "V." : ). Isn't it interesting how those past events catch up with us later in life? It's true in real life and it's certainly a common theme in crime fiction.
I like fast paced thrillers! If I found the book in English, I will read it!
Here is my Crime Fiction Alphabet: V post!
Margot: yes, past events are very useful for the crime writer :D
Gautami: I really think you´d enjoy this one.
Your fourth language. *sigh* I can only marginally claim two languages and that's really stretching it!
I wish I'd had more opportunities as a child for languages.
Now you are just bragging - your fourth language indeed - you make me feel so inadequate with my one and a quarter languages.
I really do want to read this one though - on my wishlist I put an asterisk every time I see another review that says good things and this one has lots of asterisks next to it.
Kelly: as a Danish child, you can stay at home all your life, or you can begin to approach some of the languages that will enable you to communicate with the world. I think it is as simple as that.
Bernadette: of course I brag - learning languages is the only thing I can do! Your asterisk system sounds good; I have also learned to write on my list WHO recommended it (so far I have only found ONE of Maxine´s favourites that I don´t like very much).
