How interesting! Tell us more about the black structure at the end of the church. Also...why is the plaster thicker at the base of the church?
Oh, I thought that the church on Venø is the smallest. I was told as a child, when we were camping on the small island and visited the church. And I was wrong about the period too. Thought this was roman!
Kelly, I am not exactly an expert on church architecture, but I think I can solve these questions. The wooden structure is a bell tower. I´ll post a picture of the bell later (can´t give you all my pictures in one post). The ´plaster´ or whitewash, at the base is granite boulders, part of the foundation. It is built around 1450-1550, by the way.
Bente: Well, the windows are neither-nor. My sources tell me that the roman period ended around 1240 while Gothic was used from 1150 to 1525. And it is only called the smallest *village* church, not the smallest church. So perhaps the one on Venø is the smallest island church???
And this is one reason I love Denmark!
