Thy´s Day # 16

This beautiful christening dress was sewn by my great-grandmother in 1922. She lived in Thy all her life, most of the time in the parish next to ours. Before she married, she trained as a dressmaker. My mother and her siblings were baptized in the dress which is still in fairly good condition.

How beautiful and still in such perfect condition. How lucky you are to have such a precious thing in the family.

How lovely, Dorte. Both that you still have the lovely dress, and for the tradition it represents.

We don´t exactly have it in my family. My mother didn´t even know it still existed until recently when one of her cousins let her borrow it for a few days. I used this opportunity to take some photos of it (both for my blog and for my siblings - I am the genealogist of my family).

How beautiful and special!! Even more so since it was handmade by a family member.

We have a christening gown that has been used in our family since 1944, but I think it was store-bought. Still...it's special, too.

Gosh, they seem to have had very long legs in those days :-)

We have one that my grandfather was christened in, too. It is a nice connection, isn't it.

Kelly: as I am quite interested in genealogy, I always enjoy seeing things that have belonged to my forefathers. This dress means even more to me because I knew my great-grandmother. She died at the age of 95 when I was expecting our first child.

Tim: the idea of my mother and her siblings being longlegged is quite funny as she is the one I have inherited my size from.

It was a real pleasure to see it, and I am happy that I remembered to take some pictures of it.

Hi Dorte
One of the things I really enjoy about your blog, are all those "personnel touches" you throw into the blog. And the photo of this lovely handmade christening gown is just one example. So thank for sharing the photo plus the little story behind. It is amazing how much effort people placed into handmade clothes for special occasions.

For my child I bought the dress, but my mum made the hood and I still have that. Unfortunately, they don't seem to use that kind of item, where I live now. Cheers.

Poly: actually I was very determined only to blog about crime fiction and never about my personal life from the beginning, but it takes a long time to read a book and write a proper review so I have compromised a bit with my Thy photos.

But it is nice that my readers enjoy them, and of course this one also means a lot to me.
