DJ´s Bait in the Box # 50

Do you recognize the opening lines of this thriller?

“Last night I dreamed I went to M…… again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me. There was a padlock and a chain upon the gate. I called in my dream to the lodge-keeper, and had no answer, and peering closer through the rusted spokes of the gate I saw that the lodge was uninhabited.”

  1. To all readers: this week I am not going to modify comments that include hints.

Perhaps I should have made that clearer in the post.

  2. Dorte - So sorry! I will send you an Email

  3. Sorry Dorte I did not read all your post.
I have already send you an e-mail.

  4. Margot and Jose: not at all. I appreciate your comments very much, and I could just have made it clearer that I did not want hints this week. I have sometimes included them even in competitions, and it doesn´t matter much either way as I just enjoy getting many answers.

  5. Oh well, I know this one but will not provide a hint. What a pity as when hints are allowed I usually cannot provide any ;-)

  6. BTW, you are back on my list of favorites at my revived blog.

  7. I don't know this one :-D so no hints from me anyway.

  8. R.T.: I have decided not to bring hints this time. We can´t make it too easy ;)

I am afraid I hadn´t even noticed I had fallen out of favour. I lost my blog roll some time ago, and it took me very long to restore most of it (not sure I have found everybody yet).

Louise: how unfortunate (don´t tell anyone, but perhaps if you tried googling the quotation ... :D). At least you will have a chance tomorrow and Friday.

  9. WOw - I know one, too. Very fun. :)

  10. Is there a more wonderful first line in fiction. I doubt it.

  11. I'm so excited, I actually know one!!!

  12. Finally I know one! I won't email, because I work in a bookstore and don't want to win. But I'm enjoying the anniversary hoopla anyway!

  13. Care, Beth, Seana: I am glad I chose one which is not quite hopeless ;)

Patti: there may be, but I agree that this one is compelling - I haven´t read the book for twenty years, but I remembered it.

  14. Oh Dorte, my email is not going through and I finally recognize one. Do I have the address right?

    do.hu.ja (at) mail.tele.dk.

With @ for (at) of course. Should I add DOT com, I did and that didn't work either. I just says it's undeliverable. Rats.

  15. Don´t worry, Sandra, of course I have entered you for the competition.
