Thursday´s Quotation

"I haven´t had a chance to go grocery shopping for about a month and I´m running short. All I´ve had to eat today is a lightly sautéed veal escalope in a jus of fresh peaches and rosemary, served with courgettes and grilled tomatoes and a crusty French stick still warm from the oven."

Another tasty morsel fresh from Donna Moore & Helena Handbasket.

  3. The review will be there tomorrow, Beth. For more information about Helena Handbasket´s taste in food, you will have to read the book, however, but I can tell you a bit about her drinking habits.

  4. I just read that selection this week, one of the fruits of my trip to Sleuth of Baker Street in Toronto. I was pleased finally to recognize one of your quotations.

My ordbekræftelse was "spite" -- a wonderful word for English speakers.

  5. I am sure you enjoyed meeting Ms Handbasket and all her little grey cells ;)
And I can see you are going to master Danish before long. Du kan jo prøve at konkurrere med Marco.

  6. I also enjoyed meeting Ms. Moore at Bouchercon in Baltimore in October.

And now I will take a chance and see if I can understand that Danish sentence without resorting to a dictionary. I am afraid I might stand little chance in a linguistic competition with Marco.

If I am right about prøve and konkurrere, it's interesting to note what appears to be Romance influence in Danish.

  7. Now I don´t know you too well enough to guess who would win the competition. And with regard to the vocabulary of Danish I ´know´ even less, because I have studied English + some German and Dutch - but never my own language. It is closely related to English, of course, but even though the grammar is far from the German, we share many words.

  8. I don't know if Marco could learn to read a new language faster than I could, but her certainly reads more languages than I do now.
